Acorns provides babies, children and young people aged 0 – 18 years who have life limiting or life threatening conditions and associated complex needs with a network of specialist palliative nursing care and support. A holistic service meets the needs of both the children and young people and their families, including the bereaved. This includes short break provision; emergency and end of life care; therapeutic and psychosocial support; sibling services; and family support. A package of care is tailored for each individual child which includes their medical, emotional, cultural, religious and spiritual needs. This package is provided both in the hospice and a family’s home.
It costs £8.8 million a year to run our care services providing care for the child and support for families. Acorns relies heavily on the community to fund the majority of its activities.

Northfield Ecocentre is a Quaker funded charity that works with the community to find practical ways to live better and protect the environment. The Ecocentre is a place where people can share knowledge, ideas & experience, ask questions & find practical solutions to sustainable living. As well as a drop in advice centre we offer workshops, demonstrations, talks and groups on a range of issues from organic gardening, sewing and crafts and cycle maintenance to insulating your home.
The aim of the groups is to provide an informal, friendly and welcoming environment where local people can learn and share skills that will help them to live more sustainably (e.g. gardening, sewing and crafts, family hour). Our projects reach out to all sectors of the local community: from interacting with children about eco-issues in ‘Green Generations’, to helping elderly and disabled to harvest their unwanted fruit in ‘Urban Harvest’.”
